Event Overview

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

North Carolina’s freshwater habitats are home to a variety of fish, reptiles and invertebrates, as well as being the source of our own drinking water. Recently it has been found that some of our waterways also contain a new kind of “P-Alphabet Soup” of toxic chemicals. Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a large family of toxic chemical pollutants that are now in our state waterways as well as in waters around the world. We will discuss how North Carolina’s alligators and fish, like striped bass, are being used as indicator species to define levels of exposure, bioaccumulation and harm being caused by GenX, PFOS and other PFAS present in NC’s lakes and rivers.

About our speaker
Dr. Scott Belcher is a research professor at North Carolina State University in the Department of Biological Sciences, and is a member of the Center for Human Health and the Environment. Belcher specializes in understanding how exposures to low levels of man-made chemicals can affect activities of hormones to cause disease.
