NC State Seeks Director of Communications

     On July 1, 2013, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences became part of NC State’s new, comprehensive College of Sciences. The College of Sciences is home to the university’s programs in biological sciences, chemical and physical sciences, mathematical and statistical sciences and earth-systems sciences. This new college was designed to enhance NC State’s position as a national and international leader in science research, teaching, communication and outreach and to make the university a destination for the best and brightest scientific talent for decades to come.
     The Director of Communications is the college’s chief communications officer and is primarily responsible for positioning it as a national and international leader. To achieve this overarching goal, the director develops and manages comprehensive marketing communications, public relations and outreach programs for the college to market the strengths and accomplishments of its programs, faculty and students to alumni, potential students, parents, friends, peers, and business and industry. The director provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to develop effective ways to reach a national audience through print and electronic communications – including Web, social media, video and audio content – as well as news media relations and on- and off-campus outreach programs.
     The Director of Communications must have demonstrated ability to build effective internal and external relationships and must have experience communicating with a  global audience.  Excellent interpersonal skills, originality and innovation, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and leadership are essential to this position.  The director must have the ability to handle multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment, and still meet deadlines.
     Qualifications include: a bachelor’s degree in a public relations, marketing, communications or a related field or in a relevant scientific discipline (master’s degree preferred); at least five years experience in marketing, advertising, publications, or media and public relations; exceptional organizational and communication skills, along with the ability to work with faculty, administrators, and volunteers in a large, complex research university.
