Science by the Slice: Online Authorship and Machine Learning

Welcome to Science by the Slice! We’re excited to host this hybrid event. We’ll meet in in-person at 700 Park Offices Drive, (behind the Boxyard) to hear this month’s speaker while we enjoy pizza, but space is limited. You can also join live remotely via Sigma Xi’s Facebook page if you’re unable to make it in person. A zoom link will also be sent out to registered attendees.

This month we’ll be speaking with Dr. Siobahn Day Grady, Assistant Professor & Program Director of Information for the School of Library and Information Sciences at NC Central University.

Understanding Authorship Attribution of Tweets on Online Social Networks

Abstract: With the prevalence of fake news and cyber-crimes, it has become increasingly difficult to determine authorship of information on online social networks. Forensic professionals, researchers, and regular users require methods for determining authorship. Authorship attribution will be a solution to determining the veracity of these sources as well as a preventative measure in stalling these types of occurrences. This talk will focus on an overview of Dr. Day Grady’s research that includes using machine learning to solve problems (e.g., in healthcare, misinformation, and autonomous vehicles) and her advocacy in STEM. She will also share her journey into STEM.

Bio: Dr. Siobahn Day Grady is the first woman to graduate with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (2018). She is an Assistant Professor and Program Director of Information Science/Systems in the School of Library and Information Sciences at North Carolina Central University, Lab Director for the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Equity Research (LAIER), Co-Director for the Center for Data Equity (CODE), and an Office e-Learning faculty fellow at North Carolina Central University. Her research focuses on utilizing machine learning to identify sources of misinformation on social media and to improve fault detection in autonomous vehicles.

We hope you will join us at RTP for an hour of learning about science over a slice ( or several!) of pizza as we come together as a community in person and online.

For in-person attendees:

RSVP for attending in person is required and due Wednesday, Oct 4th at 12:30 pmSpace is limited. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Please don’t RSVP unless you plan to attend. There will be a waitlist if the RSVP capacity is reached.
