The Poetry of Good SciComm
Hi SCONCs –
This is going to be a cool one! (Well, they’re all cool, IMHO, but this one features one of our own – SCONC Board Member Bradley Allf, plus, a chance for audience participation!)
SciComm Lunch-and-Learn – Science Sonnets: The Poetry of Good SciComm
Thursday, April 15, 2021, Noon EST
Presenter: Bradley Allf (NC State University, SCONC)
“The words of poems are the tuft and final applause of science.” So said the great American poet Walt Whitman. But what did he mean? Is there science in poetry? Poetry in science? Join us as we explore these questions with Bradley Allf, a doctoral candidate at NC State University who is both a scientist and poet, and will share his thoughts on how these two endeavors not only coexist, but complement each other.
We’re going to try something different this month. We want to encourage you to write and submit your own science poem in advance. It can be haiku, a couplet, a sonnet, a limerick, free verse…whatever inspires you. We will read through them, select several that we particularly like and invite the authors to introduce their poem, read it and discuss it during our session. We’d love to hear from all the scientist-poets (or poet-scientists) out there.
To RSVP and find out how to submit your own science poem, please visit: https://scienceandsociety.duke.edu/events/scicomm-lunch-learn-science-sonnets-the-poetry-of-good-scicomm/
Hope you can join us!
